"Dark Night of the Soul"

 

"La nuit noire de l'âme" (translated as "The Dark Night of the Soul") is a concept that originates from the writings of the Spanish mystic and poet Saint John of the Cross (San Juan de la Cruz) in the 16th century. He was a prominent figure in the Christian tradition and a key figure in the Spanish Renaissance. Saint John of the Cross was also a Carmelite friar and a close collaborator of Saint Teresa of Ávila.

In his works, particularly in his poem "Noche oscura del alma" (Dark Night of the Soul) and his book "Subida del Monte Carmelo" (The Ascent of Mount Carmel), Saint John of the Cross describes a spiritual journey that a person goes through on their path toward union with God.
